Issue 36
April 2021
Welcome to issue #36 of Accelerating News!
The spring issue of Accelerating News brings you reports from the upgrades taking place during Long-Shutdown 2, not only for the high-luminosity run of the LHC, but also for the renovation of existing facilities. It covers the developments taking place for the future collider studies; and reports on the applications of accelerator technology and recent events organised by the accelerator community.
For the future of particle physics research at the LHC, this issue reports on both the delivery of superconducting coils for 11T dipoles developed for the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC); and the development of power transmission lines, completed with the successful qualification of a demonstrator cold powering system for the HL-LHC Matching Sections. Moreover, looking further into the future of the field, this issue also reports on novel methods and technologies to reach a cost- and energy-efficient cryogenic cycle for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) with news of a Nelium turbocompressor test facility assembled at the University of Stuttgart in cooperation with TU Dresden.
In the field of applied accelerator science, new projects co-funded by the European Commission pave the way for different medical applications of accelerator technology and recent experiments reveal new applications of synchrotron light sources: an international team of accelerator experts have used a laser to manipulate electron bunches so that they emitted intense light pulses with a laser-like character.
On the topic of new areas of study, this issue features two reports from recent events, focusing on whether accelerators can be used for the detection or generation of Gravitational Wave (“Storage Rings and Gravitational Waves” – SRGW2021) and on the different technologies developed for producing, handling and preserving nanobeams and ultra-short bunches (Nanobeam Technologies). The announcement of the 12th Workshop on Accelerators Operation (5-8 October 2021), organised by the ALBA Synchrotron, brings this issue to a close.
Your editors invite to browse the new issue and keep an eye on our new category dedicated to I.FAST, an H2020 project approved in November 2020. Happy reading!
